• How much does it cost to adopt a pet?
    • There is a $15 fee paid to animal control regardless of the animal.
    • If the animal hasn’t been fixed, then there are two options.  You can go through our low cost spay/neuter program which is $85 for dogs and $70 for cats.  This includes rabies, distemper, and pain medicine for after surgery.  The other option is to have the animal fixed within 30 days at the facility of your choosing and send back proof that your pet has been fixed.
    • If the animal has been fixed by the HSOPCVA, then adopters are responsible for reimbursing for that surgery in the adoption fee.

  • This animal is already fixed! Why do I have to pay the Spay/Neuter fee?
    • If the animal you are adopting from Animal Control has been spayed/neutered and you’re asked to pay, that means the surgery was paid for by the humane society prior to adoption, so you are simply reimbursing HSOPCVA

  • Do you adopt to people outside of Pulaski county or people from other states?
    • Yes, we do adopt out to people living in other counties in Virginia and we may adopt out to people living in nearby states (NC, TN, MD, etc.) However, you are responsible for coming to the shelter to pick up the animal (since we do not have the means to transport an animal to you) AND any cat or dog MUST be spayed or neutered and receive a rabies shot in Pulaski County before he/she can be adopted and transported across state lines.

  • If I fill out an Adoption Application, how long will it take for you to contact me?
    • Depending upon the interest in the specific pet, it can take up to 1 – 3 business days.  Sometimes with cats we can review the application on the same day.

  • I didn’t get the pet I wanted and I don’t understand why. What do I do now?
    • Sometimes numerous applications are received for one animal. The personality and needs of the pet are matched with the most appropriate home environment.
You may apply for another pet, or ask us to change the name of the pet on your application for another one.

  • It says the pet I want went to “rescue”. What does that mean?

  • If the animal I’d like to adopt is no longer available because it’s been sent to a rescue, can I contact that rescue about adopting it? Can you give me the name/number of that rescue?

  • Why do I have to work so hard to adopt from the Humane Society?
    • It is our mission and reason for existence to help animals in need. Switching homes can be incredibly stressful for most animals, so we want any new pet and family union to be a lasting success. Therefore, more details from applicants gives us a greater chance of finding a perfect match. Please understand that our goal is to place animals in loving forever homes.
